Gary Smith has a Leo fender signature model ASAT that he got through an endorsement relationship with G & L in 1990, shortly before Leo Fender passed away. In Gary's words, "It is a great looking, playing and sounding guitar. Every time I play it in a club I get positive comments on the tones I get and the classic look of the guitar. I would never part with it and I plan on passing it along to my son (Hopefully a long time from now)."

The photo at left I shows a picture Gary and Leo together on the day Gary received the guitar. The photo was taken in the G&L Music Sales office on Fender Avenue in Fullerton. Gary is holding his ASAT III Signature and Leo is holding a rare ASAT prototype equipped with two Z-Coil pickups. According to Gary, "This was a very good day in my life. This guitar and these photos are priceless treasures."

This picture was taken at the LEO FENDER MEMORIAL JAM to benefit Parkinson's research. The concert was on August 10th, 1991 (That would have been Mr. Fender's 82nd birthday).

Gary is shown with his ASAT III on the far right.  The bass player next to him is playing an ASAT bass. Other musicians included James Burton, Albert Lee, Jeff Berlin, Robben Ford, Robbie Krieger, Yngwie Malmsteen, Randy Hansen, Skunk Baxter, Dick Dale, Vivian Campbell, Steve Lukather, Carmine Appice, Tony Franken and others.
