G&L Featured Artist: Federico "Fed" Pol

Fed Pol and his G&L Kiloton 5 during rehearsal for the Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie 2017 Summer tour.

Born and raised in Dallas, Texas, Federico "Fed" Pol grew up in an incredibly rich musical environment, exposed to and ultimately learning to play country, R&B, funk, pop, rock, Tex-Mex, blues, jazz, Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, even Mariachi music. The bug bit him early, and soon he was an underage musician playing gigs in local bars. The day after his high school graduation, Fed packed up and hit the road with a dance/show band, honing his stage craft and getting noticed. It wasn’t long before Fed had earned a local reputation, becoming a sought-after musician in the area. Fed set his sights higher.

After a couple of years of touring, Fed returned to Dallas and got to work building his music knowledge, immersing himself in music theory books and learning how to read music. Feeling prepared and encouraged by his musician friends, Fed moved to Los Angeles to take a shot at the big league. It wasn’t easy, but Fed’s talent and determination paid off, having worked with Joe Cocker, Lindsey Buckingham, Mick Fleetwood, Stevie Nicks, Ricky Martin, Jose Feliciano, Keb-Mo, Beth Hart, Lita Ford, Glen Hughes, Doug Fieger (The Knack) to name a few.

G&L Sales Manager Ron Moreno introduced Fed to the Kiloton 5, and the minute he plugged in the bass he was instantly drawn to its thunderous sound. Fed recalls the day:

"A very good friend and fine bassist himself, Ron Moreno, told me about the Kiloton 5. I’d known Ron since the late ‘80s, when we used to spend countless hours hanging out at the Bass Centre in Los Angeles. Recently, I was in L.A. rehearsing for the Lindsey Buckingham/Christine McVie tour and with me I had all the basses I thought would work for this gig. Ron suggested I check out the Kiloton 5, so of course I’d give it a try and tell him what I thought. Well, that changed the minute I plugged in the bass. The front-of-house engineer, monitor engineer and crew all raved about the incredible sound of the Kiloton 5. The verdict was unanimous: the bass sounded fantastic. I ended up playing it the rest of the day and now I have my own Kiloton 5."

Fed is impressed by all the distinctive tones available from the Kiloton 5's G&L MFD humbucker and series/split/parallel mini-toggle switch, with both nuance and punch enhanced by a G&L Saddle Lock bridge. All this is delivered in a package that immediately feels comfortable and familiar to fans of Leo Fender’s designs. Fed sums it up this way:

"The Kiloton 5 has a classic look and feel reminiscent of what I began playing on, that timeless vibe, yet it delivers a powerful modern Leo Fender sound. In my book, Fullerton, California, is the center of the universe for bass and guitar building history, and I think this new Kiloton 5 successfully builds on Leo’s innovations at his G&L factory on Fender Avenue."

Fed is currently rehearsing for a summer tour with Fleetwood Mac members Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie, with The Wallflowers as the opening act. There will also be upcoming appearances on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon as well as the CBS Morning Show in New York.
