Date Completed: May 25, 2011
Description: 3-Tone Sunburst over Swamp Ash, Quartersawn Maple neck with Ebony fingerboard and Vintage Tint Gloss neck finish.
Special Features: From time to time we revisit the idea of building Semi-Hollow basses other than the ASAT Bass Semi-Hollow. We're looking for tone, balance and feel. Balance is an important part of the equation, and if the body becomes too light the bass will be neck-heavy. We were last exploring this concept back in '07 and didn't reach a conclusion as to how we might offer Semi-Hollow L-series basses. The subject came up again in '11 and it so happened that a body and neck were available but had never been built out. Clearly we had been testing extremes: just how dense could the body wood be yet still result in an acceptable weight for the instrument? Would it still have an airy dimension to the tone? This bass answers those questions. Weighing in 10.85 lbs., which isn't all too heavy for a beefy 5-string bass, it's not the featherweight one would expect. Moreover, it uses the 1 3/4" body thickness compared to the slimmer 1 5/8" body thickness as used on more recent L-series basses. As for the tone? The solid punch typical of an L-2500 remains that but there's an additional airy dimension, particularly in the top ends. Once again, the crew isn't ready to make a decision on whether to offer Semi-Hollow L-series (or M-series, for that matter) basses. As for now, we've made our observations and notes, so we're ready to let this prototype out and see what the bassists think.

Description: Clear Satin over Teak-Oiled Monkey Pod, Quartersawn Maple neck with Rosewood fingerboard and Light Tint Satin neck finish, Black hardware.
Special Features: Our wood suppliers know we're always up for something interesting, and one day a supplier told us they could get some top quality Monkey Pod. We brought in some samples and it was so nice we grabbed whatever we could from the supplier. For this L-2000 we tested the idea of using Teak Oil to enrich the wood, allowing it to dry thoroughly before shooting a thin coat of Clear Satin to seal it in. We could have just left the body oiled with no top coat, but that would require the owner to re-apply Teak Oil as needed. We wanted the look without the maintenance so we gave this a try. It's still holding up well and looks great. Once we had the look of the body down, we decided a Rosewood finerboard would look rich against the Monkey Pod body, and a formula for Light Tint Satin on the neck adds warmth to the Quartersawn Maple. Rounding out this proto are some spare Black parts we'd had in stock since we built the the CLF Centennial L-2000 basses in 2009.

Date Completed: September 6, 2011
Description: Blonde over Swamp Ash, Quartersawn Maple neck with Clear Gloss finish.
Special Features: Though the L-1000 was discontinued in the early ‘90s, from time to time the idea of building a special run comes up, including the 2008 BadAssBassPlayers.com Limited Edition. A few years later, the idea came up again. We built this L-1000 as an example, this time with a slender waist as on the current L-2000. We didn’t get around to building them, but we hung on to this proto for long enough so it’s time to let a “wunkay” fan have a chance to own it.

Description: Cherryburst over Lightly Spalted Alder body, Quartersawn Maple neck with Light Tint Gloss finish.
Special Features: We'd been doing more with Spalted Alder on special models in recent years, typically with either a Clear Gloss or Clear Satin body finish. We had a nice piece of lightly Spalted Alder which we wanted to give a more traditional look, in this case with a subtle Cherryburst finish. At the time we were preparing to release the Light Tint Gloss neck finish in the January 2013 price list, so we thought this is a good opportunity to see the shade of tint we'd chosen on a Quartersawn Maple neck coupled with a Cherryburst body. To our eyes, it's a great complement to the body: light enough that it doesn't appear obviously tinted, yet its warmth flows beautifully with the Cherryburst body.

Description: Monkey Pod (East Indian Walnut) body with Teak Oil treatment under clear gloss finish, Quartersawn Maple neck with Rosewood fingerboard and Clear Satin finish.
Special Features: The first Monkey Pod instruments we made were finished with a combination of teak oil and clear satin finish. Next we wanted to see how a gloss finish would look as well as verify that the clear gloss finish adheres properly to the teak oil treated body. After some successful experiments on some small pieces of Monkey Pod, we made this complete M-2500.

Description: Nitrocellulose White Blonde over Swamp Ash body, Quartersawn Maple neck with Rosewood fingerboard and Vintage Tint Nitrocellulose Gloss finish.
Special Features: For some time we've considered offering nitrocellulose finishes apart on instruments without the aging process on the G&L Rustic models. This L-2000 is an example which we built in 2010 and kept it to see how the finish changed over time. As expected, the thin nitro finish has slightly sunk into the grain of the wood for a nice patina.

Date Completed: February 16, 2012
Description: Flame Maple top over Swamp Ash body with Lemon Drop finish, Roasted Maple neck with Rosewood fingerboard and clear satin finish. Model logo deleted.
Special Features: Our supplier of Hard Rock Maple visited us and brought a sample of Roasted Hard Rock Maple. He explained that the roasting process involves intense pressure and high heat which alters the cell structure, supposedly making it stronger. The resulting cosmetic effect is a rich, brown color throughout the treated wood. Having seen other instruments built with Roasted Maple necks, the G&L team decided to build a bass using Roasted Maple with a Rosewood fingerboard to evaluate the durability of the wood.
Rather than build a standard bass, the team chose a beautifully figured Flame Maple top, applying a Lemon Drop finish to complement the rich brown hue of the Roasted Maple neck. The result is this stunning L-2000.

Description: Spalted Alder body with Natural Satin finish, Quarter-sawn Maple neck with Rosewood fingerboard and Light Tint Satin finish.
Special Features: We were contacted by a wood supplier interested in doing business with G&L. At the time we were satisfied with our suppliers and not interested in adding another. During the initial conversation we asked if them if they had any interesting or exotic woods in their inventory and they mentioned they had some Spalted Alder. None of us had seen Spalted Alder before, so we asked them to send some pictures of the wood. Once we saw the photos we were impressed by the appearance and ordered a small quantity for our evaluation. This L-2000 is the first prototype instrument we made using this wood. The instrument has a smooth, even tone, is light weight and one of the more unusual looking basses you will find anywhere.

Description: Spalted Alder body with Old-school Tobacco Sunburst finish, Quarter-sawn Maple neck with Pao Ferro fingerboard and Clear Satin finish.
Special Features: We loved the look of the finished the body for the Spalted Alder L-2000 CLF60345. While that body was sprayed in a clear clear satin finish, next we wanted to see was how Spalted Alder would look like with one of our bursts with a gloss finish. Old-school Tobacco Sunburst as G&L made in the 1980s, with a light, more transparent edge that a typical Tobacco Sunburst, really highlights the unique grain pattern of the Spalted Alder.

Description: Monkey Pod (East Indian Walnut) body with Clear Satin finish, Black knurled knobs, tuning machines, string tree, strap buttons and bridge plate, Hard Rock Maple neck with Rosewood fingerboard and Clear Satin finish.
Special Features: We were approached by a new wood supplier and in our conversation with him he told us about some Monkey Pod he had obtained. It looked and sounded interesting so we bought a few pieces to try. This is the first instrument we made with a Monkey Pod body, so the first thing we wanted to see was how it would look with a simple Clear Satin finish. Afterward, we ran several experiments on small pieces of Monkey Pod to create our unique finishing technique for this wood. This instrument's body exhibits the natural state of the Monkey Pod wood.

ASAT Bass Semi-Hollow
Serial Number: CLF60381
Date Completed: April 26, 2011
Description: Dark Korina (Black Limba) body with Aged Natural finish, Quarter-sawn Maple neck with Light Tint Gloss finish and Pao Ferro fingerboard.
Special Features: We received a sample shipment African Limba, better known to musicians as Korina, from our supplier who explained that they could deliver premium quality Korina if we were interested. Among the sample pieces received, we found two beautiful examples that were considerably darker than the others. After speaking with the supplier and doing some research online, we learned that Korina is separated into two groups: “White Limba” and “Black Limba”. With the samples of both White Limba and Black Limba in our shop, we began thinking about what sort of guitars or basses would be interesting to build. Over the next few months, the G&L Custom Creations team developed the Korina Collection which was announced on July 19th, 2011.
Musicians widely recognize White Limba, and with a classic appearance in mind, the team decided to use White Limba for the Korina Collection. However, we were intrigued enough by the Black Limba pieces that we built this bass and an ASAT Deluxe guitar.

L-2000 Semi-Hollow Fretless
Serial Number: CLF56519
Date Completed: July 13, 2011
Description: Semi-Hollow Swamp Ash body with 3-Tone Sunburst finish, Quarter-sawn Maple neck with Ebony fretless fingerboard and Light Tint Satin finish.
Special Features: A few years ealier, we'd made a semi-hollow L-2000 and L-2500 bodies, with at least one or two being built into complete instruments. We hadn't pursued the concept further, so when we came across this body in the wood shop, we decided we'd finish it and build a bass for us to spend some more time with. We recalled how the semi-hollow body adds a smooth, natural compression effect on the L-2000 sound, and then we wondered how that would translate to a fretless. We had an ebony fretless neck from a JB-2 handy so we used it to build up this semi-hollow L-2000. Director of Manufacturing Steve Grom did some gigs with it and reported that he was pleased with the warmth the semi-hollow body brought to the powerful Leo Fender Magnetic Field Design pickups. Next, Steve put a set of D’Addario Black Tape Wound Strings on the bass to give it an even more traditional fretless voice. Though the team hasn't decided whether L-series or M-series basses will be offered with semi-hollow bodies, having served its purpose this prototype is now released for sale.
