The following prototype basses have been made available to G&L dealers. As each prototype is shipped to an authorized G&L dealer, the dealer name and location will be listed.

L-2000

CLF067928

Serial Number: CLF067928

Date Completed: July 11, 2013

Description: Blackburst over swamp ash, rosewood fingerboard, Clear Satin neck finish with Clear Gloss headstock face.

Purpose: Dave McLaren recalls, "We were looking to introduce the option of a gloss headstock face, for players that like the feel of satin but prefer the look of a gloss headstock face with a rosewood or ebony fingerboard. We built this L-2000 with the intent of sending it for official photos, but we didn't get the gloss headstock face into the mid-year price list so we didn't send it for photos. The gloss headstock face option was introduced the following year in the mid-year 2014 price list."

Available for Sale: G&L dealers may order. Suggested Retail Price $2,070

L-2000

CLF070620

Serial Number: CLF070620

Date Completed: May 29, 2014

Description: 3-Tone over alder, rosewood fingerboard, Clear Satin neck finish.

Purpose: Dave McLaren recalls, "We built this L-2000 using the control and battery cavities from an M-2000. Ultimately, we'd like the L-2000 to have a separate battery compartment, and this prototype explored the possibility of sharing the same cavities for M-series and L-series."

Available for Sale: G&L dealers may order. Suggested Retail Price $1,900

L-2500

CLF071645

Serial Number: CLF071645

Date Completed: October 3, 2014

Description: Autumnburst with Satin Frost top coat over swamp ash, birdseye maple fingerboard on quartersawn maple neck with stain and Clear Satin finish, model logo delete, silver border G&L logo.

Purpose: Dave McLaren recalls, "We built this L-2500 to explore a few things. First, the body finish: we had used Autumburst over Western Sugar Pine for certain Launch Edition ASAT guitars, but we wanted to see it with Satin Frost over swamp ash. We also wanted to have a look at using the M-2500 battery and control cavities on an L-2500, similar to what we did with L-2000 prototype CLF070620. Lastly, we wanted to expore a wood stain on the neck, to see how it highlights the grain on birdseye as well as quartersawn maple. Sometimes prototypes explore one element, sometimes they cover several things as on this bass."

M-2000

CLF072158

CLF072158

Serial Number: CLF072158

Date Completed: November 21, 2014

Description: Graphite Frost over alder, full matching painted neck, rosewood fingerboard, model logo delete, silver border G&L logo.

Purpose: Dave McLaren recalls, "In the mid-to-late '80s, G&L made many instruments with full matching necks. Some of us here, especially me, have had a thing for this look so we decided to build a few instruments and let the idea sink in. At the time this is written, February 2015, we've not decided whether to, or how exactly to offer this option. However, we've had our fun and the point has been made. The full matching neck may someday become an option, but there will be quite a bit of sussing out to do before we get there. Until then, here's a prototype that looks amazing in Graphite Frost."

Available for Sale: G&L dealers may order. Suggested Retail Price $2,050

SB-2

CLF071751

Serial Number: CLF071751

Date Completed: October 6, 2014

Description: Graphite Frost over alder, 1-ply black pickguard, full matching painted neck, rosewood fingerboard, model logo delete, white-on-black G&L logo.

Date Completed: November 24, 2010

Description: Graphite Frost over alder, 3-ply black pickguard, black bridge, tuners and string tree, quartersawn maple neck with Clear Satin finish.

Purpose: Dave McLaren recalls, "We made this bass when we were developing our satin frost finish concept. This SB-2 is finished in what I eventually named Graphite Frost, but at the time the working name was Charcoal Satin. Just to highlight the vibe, certain black hardware parts we had left over from the C.L.F. Centennial L-2000 were added to the mix."

L-2500

Serial Number: CLF066437

Date Completed:January 7, 2013

Description: Nearly Naked™ Honey Ale over swamp ash, rosewood fingerboard, Clear Satin neck finish.

Purpose: Dave McLaren recalls, "This L-2500 prototype was made with the same Nearly Naked Honey Ale finish as on the 2012 Special Collection: Honey Ale models. That collection included M-series but not L-series basses. At the time we built this bass, we were contemplating whether we should add L-series to the collection and let it continue for a little longer, but we decided against it."

M-2000

CLF60608

Serial Number: CLF60608

Date Completed: April 10, 2012

Description: Violet Ice (R&D test) over swamp ash, rosewood fingerboard, Clear Satin neck finish.

Purpose: Dave McLaren recalls, "This bass was built to explore possibility of a violet version of what would become our Black Ice finish. While we liked the look, it would have to wait for a while: we were thinking about introducing the black version of this finish later in the year."

Available at: www.musicstorelive.com Suggested Retail Price $2,000

M-2000

CLF062267

Serial Number: CLF062267

Date Completed:July 18, 2011

Description: Graphite Metallic over alder, rosewood fingerboard, Clear Satin neck finish.

Purpose: This M-2000 prototype has an L-2000 decal on the headstock. Dave McLaren recalls,"At the time it was built, we were certain we were going to build this model but the name was undecided. I was thinking to go with L-2000M, in some way following Leo's early L-2000E where the E denoted active. Ultimately, I liked the sound of M-2000. M follows L in the alphabet, just as the M-2000 follows the L-2000, and to my ears M symbolized modern, as the M-2000 is a modern interpretation of Leo's design. I sent this prototype up to my friends at Bass Player Magazine to see what they thought. A few weeks passed, then I got a review sent to me for fact-check. Wow, was I surprised! I was looking at a review, all laid out with photos of the prototype with the wrong name! Luckily, by that time, we'd settled on the name M-2000, built a final one and had photos shot, so I sent them the photos to use with the review. Good thing they loved this prototype!"

Available for Sale: G&L dealers may order. Suggested Retail Price $1,900

M-2500

CLF60432

Serial Number: CLF60432

Date Completed: May 24, 2011

Description: Midnight Blue over alder, maple neck with Light Tint Satin finish.

Purpose: This M-2500 prototype has no model decal on the headstock. Dave McLaren recalls,"At the time it was built, we were certain we were going to build this model but the name was undecided. I was thinking to go with L-2500M, in some way following Leo's early L-2000E where the E denoted active. Ultimately, I liked the sound of M-2500. M follows L in the alphabet, and to my ears M symbolized modern, as the M-2500 is a modern interpretation of the L-2500, which itself is a 5-string version of Leo's L-2000 design. The work order for this bass describes it as an L-2500 with new wiring. It has the M pickup specs as well, so this is indeed an M-2500, but at the time, it had no name."

Available for Sale: G&L dealers may order. Suggested Retail Price $2,150

M-2000

CLF062230

Serial Number: CLF062230

Date Completed: July 13, 2011

Description: Midnight Blue over alder, maple neck with matching headstock and Light Tint Satin finish.

The work order for this bass describes it as an L-2000 with new wiring. It has the M pickup specs as well, so this is indeed an M-2000, but at the time, we still had no name for the model but L-2000 went on the headstock."

Custom Creations Savannah Collection ASAT Bass Semi-Hollow

CLF067460

Serial Number: CLF067460

Date Completed: May 13, 2013

Description: Old School Tobacco Sunburst over Korina on semi-hollow Okoume body, quartersawn maple neck with Pau Ferro fingerboard, Light Tint Gloss neck finish.

Purpose: This Savannah Collection ASAT Bass Semi-Hollow is the prototype for the Collection and was used for official photos for the press release and glguitars.com. Dave McLaren recalls, "While this bass was being made, I was still thinking about what to name the collection. We'd already decided to go ahead, so the instrument was built using the old part number for the Korina Collection ASAT Bass, the closest model in our computer system. Someday an owner will look under the pickup, find the production tag, and wonder why it refers to a Korina Collection ASAT Bass. This is the reason."

Custom Creations Korina Collection ASAT Bass

CLF60318

Serial Number: CLF60318

Date Completed: May 11, 2011

Description: Aged Natural Gloss over Korina, quartersawn maple neck with Pau Ferro fingerboard, Light Tint Gloss neck finish.

Purpose: This Korina Collection ASAT Bass is the prototype for the Collection and was used for official photos for the press release and glguitars.com. Dave McLaren recalls, "While this bass was being made, we'd already decided to go ahead with this model in the Korina Collection, but no part number had been set up as we hadn't made one before. Therefore, this instrument was built using the old part number for an ASAT Bass in Natural Ash, the closest model in our computer system. Someday an owner will look under the pickup, find the production tag, and wonder why it refers to ASAT Bass in Natural Ash. Here's why."

Available for Sale: G&L dealers may order. Suggested Retail Price $2,200

L-2000

CLF48241

Serial Number: CLF48241

Date Completed: May 25, 2011

Description: 3-Tone Sunburst over Swamp Ash, Quartersawn Maple neck with Ebony fingerboard and Vintage Tint Gloss neck finish.

Special Features: From time to time we revisit the idea of building Semi-Hollow basses other than the ASAT Bass Semi-Hollow. We're looking for tone, balance and feel. Balance is an important part of the equation, and if the body becomes too light the bass will be neck-heavy. We were last exploring this concept back in '07 and didn't reach a conclusion as to how we might offer Semi-Hollow L-series basses. The subject came up again in '11 and it so happened that a body and neck were available but had never been built out. Clearly we had been testing extremes: just how dense could the body wood be yet still result in an acceptable weight for the instrument? Would it still have an airy dimension to the tone? This bass answers those questions. Weighing in 10.85 lbs., which isn't all too heavy for a beefy 5-string bass, it's not the featherweight one would expect. Moreover, it uses the 1 3/4" body thickness compared to the slimmer 1 5/8" body thickness as used on more recent L-series basses. As for the tone? The solid punch typical of an L-2500 remains that but there's an additional airy dimension, particularly in the top ends. Once again, the crew isn't ready to make a decision on whether to offer Semi-Hollow L-series (or M-series, for that matter) basses. As for now, we've made our observations and notes, so we're ready to let this prototype out and see what the bassists think.

L-2000

CLF061419

Serial Number: CLF061419

Date Completed: April 8, 2011

Description: Clear Satin over Teak-Oiled Monkey Pod, Quartersawn Maple neck with Rosewood fingerboard and Light Tint Satin neck finish, Black hardware.

Special Features: Our wood suppliers know we're always up for something interesting, and one day a supplier told us they could get some top quality Monkey Pod. We brought in some samples and it was so nice we grabbed whatever we could from the supplier. For this L-2000 we tested the idea of using Teak Oil to enrich the wood, allowing it to dry thoroughly before shooting a thin coat of Clear Satin to seal it in. We could have just left the body oiled with no top coat, but that would require the owner to re-apply Teak Oil as needed. We wanted the look without the maintenance so we gave this a try. It's still holding up well and looks great. Once we had the look of the body down, we decided a Rosewood finerboard would look rich against the Monkey Pod body, and a formula for Light Tint Satin on the neck adds warmth to the Quartersawn Maple. Rounding out this proto are some spare Black parts we'd had in stock since we built the the CLF Centennial L-2000 basses in 2009.

L-1000

CLF062560

Serial Number: CLF062560

Date Completed: September 6, 2011

Description: Blonde over Swamp Ash, Quartersawn Maple neck with Clear Gloss finish.

Special Features: Though the L-1000 was discontinued in the early ‘90s, from time to time the idea of building a special run comes up, including the 2008 BadAssBassPlayers.com Limited Edition. A few years later, the idea came up again. We built this L-1000 as an example, this time with a slender waist as on the current L-2000. We didn’t get around to building them, but we hung on to this proto for long enough so it’s time to let a “wunkay” fan have a chance to own it.

M-2500

CLF066079

Serial Number: CLF066079

Date Completed: November 9, 2012

Description: Cherryburst over Lightly Spalted Alder body, Quartersawn Maple neck with Light Tint Gloss finish.

Special Features: We'd been doing more with Spalted Alder on special models in recent years, typically with either a Clear Gloss or Clear Satin body finish. We had a nice piece of lightly Spalted Alder which we wanted to give a more traditional look, in this case with a subtle Cherryburst finish. At the time we were preparing to release the Light Tint Gloss neck finish in the January 2013 price list, so we thought this is a good opportunity to see the shade of tint we'd chosen on a Quartersawn Maple neck coupled with a Cherryburst body. To our eyes, it's a great complement to the body: light enough that it doesn't appear obviously tinted, yet its warmth flows beautifully with the Cherryburst body.

M-2500

CLF065093

Serial Number: CLF065093

Date Completed: June 29, 2012

Description: Monkey Pod (East Indian Walnut) body with Teak Oil treatment under clear gloss finish, Quartersawn Maple neck with Rosewood fingerboard and Clear Satin finish.

Special Features: The first Monkey Pod instruments we made were finished with a combination of teak oil and clear satin finish. Next we wanted to see how a gloss finish would look as well as verify that the clear gloss finish adheres properly to the teak oil treated body. After some successful experiments on some small pieces of Monkey Pod, we made this complete M-2500.

L-2000

CLF56377

Serial Number: CLF56377

Date Completed: April 13, 2010

Description: Nitrocellulose White Blonde over Swamp Ash body, Quartersawn Maple neck with Rosewood fingerboard and Vintage Tint Nitrocellulose Gloss finish.

Special Features: For some time we've considered offering nitrocellulose finishes apart on instruments without the aging process on the G&L Rustic models. This L-2000 is an example which we built in 2010 and kept it to see how the finish changed over time. As expected, the thin nitro finish has slightly sunk into the grain of the wood for a nice patina.

L-2000

CLF063992

Serial Number: CLF063992

Date Completed: February 16, 2012

Description: Flame Maple top over Swamp Ash body with Lemon Drop finish, Roasted Maple neck with Rosewood fingerboard and clear satin finish. Model logo deleted.

Special Features: Our supplier of Hard Rock Maple visited us and brought a sample of Roasted Hard Rock Maple. He explained that the roasting process involves intense pressure and high heat which alters the cell structure, supposedly making it stronger. The resulting cosmetic effect is a rich, brown color throughout the treated wood. Having seen other instruments built with Roasted Maple necks, the G&L team decided to build a bass using Roasted Maple with a Rosewood fingerboard to evaluate the durability of the wood.

Rather than build a standard bass, the team chose a beautifully figured Flame Maple top, applying a Lemon Drop finish to complement the rich brown hue of the Roasted Maple neck. The result is this stunning L-2000.

L-2000

CLF60345

Serial Number: CLF60345

Date Completed: April 7, 2011

Description: Spalted Alder body with Natural Satin finish, Quarter-sawn Maple neck with Rosewood fingerboard and Light Tint Satin finish.

Special Features: We were contacted by a wood supplier interested in doing business with G&L. At the time we were satisfied with our suppliers and not interested in adding another. During the initial conversation we asked if them if they had any interesting or exotic woods in their inventory and they mentioned they had some Spalted Alder. None of us had seen Spalted Alder before, so we asked them to send some pictures of the wood. Once we saw the photos we were impressed by the appearance and ordered a small quantity for our evaluation. This L-2000 is the first prototype instrument we made using this wood. The instrument has a smooth, even tone, is light weight and one of the more unusual looking basses you will find anywhere.

ASAT Bass

CLF60346

Serial Number: CLF60346

Date Completed: April 7, 2011

Description: Spalted Alder body with Old-school Tobacco Sunburst finish, Quarter-sawn Maple neck with Pao Ferro fingerboard and Clear Satin finish.

Special Features: We loved the look of the finished the body for the Spalted Alder L-2000 CLF60345. While that body was sprayed in a clear clear satin finish, next we wanted to see was how Spalted Alder would look like with one of our bursts with a gloss finish. Old-school Tobacco Sunburst as G&L made in the 1980s, with a light, more transparent edge that a typical Tobacco Sunburst, really highlights the unique grain pattern of the Spalted Alder.

L-2000

CLF60328

Serial Number: CLF60328

Date Completed: May 2, 2011

Description: Monkey Pod (East Indian Walnut) body with Clear Satin finish, Black knurled knobs, tuning machines, string tree, strap buttons and bridge plate, Hard Rock Maple neck with Rosewood fingerboard and Clear Satin finish.

Special Features: We were approached by a new wood supplier and in our conversation with him he told us about some Monkey Pod he had obtained. It looked and sounded interesting so we bought a few pieces to try. This is the first instrument we made with a Monkey Pod body, so the first thing we wanted to see was how it would look with a simple Clear Satin finish. Afterward, we ran several experiments on small pieces of Monkey Pod to create our unique finishing technique for this wood. This instrument's body exhibits the natural state of the Monkey Pod wood.

ASAT Bass Semi-Hollow

CLF60381

Serial Number: CLF60381

Date Completed: April 26, 2011

Description: Dark Korina (Black Limba) body with Aged Natural finish, Quarter-sawn Maple neck with Light Tint Gloss finish and Pao Ferro fingerboard.

Special Features: We received a sample shipment African Limba, better known to musicians as Korina, from our supplier who explained that they could deliver premium quality Korina if we were interested. Among the sample pieces received, we found two beautiful examples that were considerably darker than the others. After speaking with the supplier and doing some research online, we learned that Korina is separated into two groups: “White Limba” and “Black Limba”. With the samples of both White Limba and Black Limba in our shop, we began thinking about what sort of guitars or basses would be interesting to build. Over the next few months, the G&L Custom Creations team developed the Korina Collection which was announced on July 19th, 2011.

Musicians widely recognize White Limba, and with a classic appearance in mind, the team decided to use White Limba for the Korina Collection. However, we were intrigued enough by the Black Limba pieces that we built this bass and an ASAT Deluxe guitar.

L-2000 Semi-Hollow Fretless

CLF56519

Serial Number: CLF56519

Date Completed: July 13, 2011

Description: Semi-Hollow Swamp Ash body with 3-Tone Sunburst finish, Quarter-sawn Maple neck with Ebony fretless fingerboard and Light Tint Satin finish.

Special Features: A few years ealier, we'd made a semi-hollow L-2000 and L-2500 bodies, with at least one or two being built into complete instruments. We hadn't pursued the concept further, so when we came across this body in the wood shop, we decided we'd finish it and build a bass for us to spend some more time with. We recalled how the semi-hollow body adds a smooth, natural compression effect on the L-2000 sound, and then we wondered how that would translate to a fretless. We had an ebony fretless neck from a JB-2 handy so we used it to build up this semi-hollow L-2000. Director of Manufacturing Steve Grom did some gigs with it and reported that he was pleased with the warmth the semi-hollow body brought to the powerful Leo Fender Magnetic Field Design pickups. Next, Steve put a set of D’Addario Black Tape Wound Strings on the bass to give it an even more traditional fretless voice. Though the team hasn't decided whether L-series or M-series basses will be offered with semi-hollow bodies, having served its purpose this prototype is now released for sale.
