The following prototype guitars have been made available to G&L dealers. As each prototype is shipped to an authorized G&L dealer, the dealer name and location will be listed.

ASAT Junior II

CLF60641

CLF60641

Serial Number: CLF60641

Date Completed: July 6, 2012

Description: Experimental blend (precursor to Autumnburst) with grain enhancement over Korina, #3 Quartersawn Maple neck with Ebony fingerboard and Light Tint Gloss finish, single-ply Black pickguard. G&L P-90 pickups.

Special Features: We had launched the Korina Collection almost exactly one year prior (July 19, 2011) to this guitar being completed, yet we're never done exploring possibilities. Often the prototyping process involves studying visual elements, particularly combinations of woods and finishes. At the time, Malcolm was experimenting with stains for grain enhancement while developing a finish which would later be called Autumnburst. This particular formula is darker in the center and the burst hue much darker than the official blend of Autumnburst as applied to the ASAT Classic Alnico Launch Edition in 2012. Having served its purpose, this prototype ended up doing a fair share of gigging by the crew and consequently it's got some scars, the sort that happen when a roadie or transport company carelessly heaves the case around. In this case, pun intended, the guitar sustained this damage while in the case. This Junior II has a particularly meaty feel and tone, thanks to its Korina body, 9.3 lb. weight, and chunky #3 neck. It's definitely a monster of a guitar, perfect for the player who doesn't mind adopting a prototype guitar that's seen its share of gigging by the factory crew and the battle scars that come with it.

ASAT Deluxe Semi-Hollow

CLF063940

Serial Number: CLF063940

Date Completed: February 9, 2012

Description: Clear Orange over African Mahogany, no Flame Top, #1 Hard Rock Maple neck with Pau Ferro fingerboard and Light Tint Gloss finish. Custom Creations decal. TV Jones Filter'Tron pickups.

Special Features: This is a Custom Creations prototype, where we were exploring the idea of building some ASATs with TV Jones Filter'Trons. We may come back to this later, perhaps with some more tweaking. We’ve played this guitar enough to know we sure do like the idea. This guitar did double duty of pickup testing with an aesthetic test of the Clear Orange on Mahogany paired with our Light Tint Gloss neck finish, an option which became available with the January 2013 price list.

Available at: The Guitar Store in Seattle, WA. www.seattleguitarstore.com Suggested Retail Price $2,400

ASAT Deluxe

CLF066102

Serial Number: CLF066102

Date Completed: November 12, 2012

Description: "Distressed" Blackburst over Flame Maple top on Equatorial Mahogany, Wood Binding, #1 Hard Rock Maple neck with Ebony fingerboard, Clear Gloss neck finish, matching "Distressed" Blackburst headstock. Seymour Duncan pickups.

Special Features: Exploring the "dark side" is always fun for master painter Malcolm McLamore. Maybe it takes him back twenty-plus years to when he used to do crazy paint jobs at Jackson Guitars. In this case, Malcolm was tinkering with methods for staining flame maple tops and he decided to apply the burst stain against the grain, rather than in the direction of the grain. Like a chef who tries a technique in the completely opposite way it's normally done, just to see what the possibilities are. In this case, he was going for a distressed appearance, a rough and aggressive burst over the rugged and mean-looking flame top rather than a seamless transition. He did the headstock in the same manner, so this may be the most angry-looking ASAT Deluxe ever. Aesthetically, it's not what the average flame-top fan will like. Some may find it challenging, some may find it awesome. Frankly, Malcolm isn't sure how he feels about it and neither are the rest of us. So, we've decided to let it out into the world and see what fans think.

ASAT S-3

CLF52529

Serial Number: CLF52529

Date Completed: December 2, 2011

Description: Blueburst over Swamp Ash, #4 Hard Rock Maple neck with Clear Satin neck finish, Pearl pickguard. G&L MFD pickups.

Special Features: The ASAT S-3 is a very cool guitar but it didn't catch on the way we thought it might, so it was discontinued. Conceptually, the idea of a three-pickup ASAT Special is fantastic, and indeed it delivered in-between tones just as ASAT Special fans dreamed of. There was a trade-off, however: that's a pretty big pickup for a middle position and it can get in the way for some players. Earlier S-3s also didn't have a means to combine the neck+bridge pickup, a hugely popular tone with ASAT Special fans. This time around, we decided to build one with a push/pull as we added to later ASAT Z-3 guitars, allowing combinations of neck+bridge or all three pickups together. We've still not decided whether the S-3 will make a comeback, but we've played this guitar enough to keep that thought simmering in our minds. This S-3 did get a fair amount of use, though it's in near-perfect condition. It spent time out gigging when one of our crew left it in his trunk over some very cold and dry winter nights (by SoCal standards, anyway). Consequently, there's a bit of finish shrinkage on the body. We could pull the guitar apart, wet sand and buff the body, but we've decided to leave it as is. After all, its condition is part of the story that goes with this S-3.

ASAT Classic Bluesboy

CLF064271

CLF064271

Serial Number: CLF064271

Date Completed: March 15, 2012

Description: Gloss White over Alder, Faux Double Bound in Midnight Blue Metallic, #1 Hard Rock Maple neck Clear Satin neck finish, Blue Candy Crush pickguard. Seymour Duncan neck pickup, G&L MFD bridge pickup.

Special Features: This guitar was inspired by a Blue Candy Crush pickguard sample sent to us by Paul Chandler. With the pickguard sitting on a desk in front of us, we just let it “speak” to us. Blue and white tones in the pickguard guided us, and the wild pattern suggested we should let it be the focal point and make the rest of the guitar more muted. So we went in the shop to look at colors found that Gloss White was a natural choice, but somehow it needed a bit more. We shrugged and let it go. As Malcolm was about to spray the body, he thought he’d do a double faux binding treatment in Midnight Blue Metallic, similar to what he'd just decided to do for the faux carbon fiber pickguard guitar (see CLF064270). After all, he’d been experimenting with double faux binding that year, following his inspiration for a guitar we built for Brad Whitford. A simple and clean-looking Maple fingerboard keeps this guitar grounded, not over-the-top.

ASAT Deluxe

CLF062974

Serial Number: CLF062974

Date Completed: October 28, 2011

Description: Cherryburst over Flame Maple top on Mahogany, Wood Binding, #3 Hard Rock Maple neck with Light Tint Gloss neck finish. Seymour Duncan pickups.

Special Features: In 2011 we were experimenting with the blend for the Light Tint Gloss finish, and as we adjusted the blend we needed to see how the blends paired with various transparent finishes and woods. In this case, we wanted to see this blend on a Cherryburst flame top guitar with Wood Binding. Later that year we finalized a blend of Light Tint Gloss for the Korina Collection (see CLF60423 for example) and the Light Tint Gloss finish was officially launched for custom orders with the January 2013 price list. We kept this gorgeous ASAT Deluxe as a reference, but its work here is done so we're ready to part with it.

Available at: The Guitar Store in Seattle, WA. www.seattleguitarstore.com Suggested Retail Price $2,600

ASAT Deluxe II

CLF066126

Serial Number: CLF066126

Date Completed: November 16, 2012

Description: Galaxy Black over Swamp Ash, #1 Hard Rock Maple neck with Clear Satin neck finish. Seymour Duncan pickups.

Special Features: Just after we launched the Black Ice Collection, we were starting to build Black Ice ASAT Deluxe II guitars when we thought again about the Galaxy Black finish which fascinated us earlier in the year (described for CLF064148). So, we decided to build this ASAT Deluxe II in Galaxy Black, a surprisingly light example at just under 7 lbs. We have got to do more with this awesome finish, but for now, we're ready to let this one go.

Available at: The Guitar Store in Seattle, WA. www.seattleguitarstore.com Suggested Retail Price $1,800

ASAT Deluxe II

CLF065956

Serial Number: CLF065956

Date Completed: October 29, 2012

Description: Old School G&L Tobacco Sunburst over Korina, #1 Quartersawn Maple neck with Light Tint Gloss finish, no pickguard. Seymour Duncan pickups.

Special Features: This prototype served two purposes. For one, we were just a couple months away from the launch of the Light Tint Gloss neck finish option in the January 2013 price list, so we wanted another look at the finish over a Quartersawn Maple neck. For another, we had a nice piece of Korina and thought it would look nice with the classic ‘80s TSB finish, known internally as “Old School Tobacco Sunburst.” The coolness of the Korina Collection lived on in our minds, but it's hard to find the really good stuff like this.

Available at: The Guitar Store in Seattle, WA. www.seattleguitarstore.com Suggested Retail Price $2,000

ASAT Deluxe II

CLF60446

Serial Number: CLF60446

Date Completed: June 14, 2011

Description: Flame Red over Alder, 3-ply Black pickguard, #1 Hard Rock Maple neck with Rosewood fingerboard, Clear Satin neck finish and Gloss Black headstock. Seymour Duncan pickups.

Special Features: The primary purpose of this guitar was to check out a color blended by Malcolm which he called “Flame Red.” We’d finished the basic development on the ASAT Deluxe II, though at this point we didn’t know we’d launch the model in the Korina Collection. Actually, we didn’t know exactly where we’d use the Deluxe II, though we knew it was too cool not to build in some form. We’re not sure if we’ll add Flame Red to our range of colors, but we’ve drooled over this guitar long enough so it’s time to let it go.

ASAT Deluxe

CLF062947

Serial Number: CLF062947

Date Completed: October 17, 2011

Description: Gloss Black over Western Sugar Pine, shortened ASAT Classic bridge with radiused corners, #1 Western Sugar Pine neck with Rosewood fingerboard and Light Tint Gloss finish, 1-ply Black pickguard. G&L pickups.

Special Features: We liked a few guitars we’d made with Western Sugar Pine bodies, so we thought we’d try using Western Sugar Pine for both the body and neck. This guitar also had R&D value in that we used a shortened ASAT Classic bridge with radiused corners, reminiscent of a modded Telecaster Jeff Beck has, as well as twin G&L exposed coil humbuckers. This guitar also has a Light Tint Gloss neck finish, for which the blend was not yet finalized at the time.

Available at: The Guitar Store in Seattle, WA. www.seattleguitarstore.com Suggested Retail Price $1,900

ASAT Junior II

CLF066078

Serial Number: CLF066078

Date Completed: November 12, 2012

Description: Cherryburst over Spalted Alder, #1 Hard Rock Maple neck with Rosewood fingerboard and Light Tint Gloss neck finish. G&L P-90 pickups.

Special Features: This guitar further explored the use of Spalted Alder in colored finishes. “Why not a Cherryburst?” we thought. After all, Cherryburst looks great on regular Alder, and this piece has subtle spalting, just enough to really highlight the grain but not so much that looks like an entirely different species. We also wanted to see how our latest blend of the Light Tint Gloss neck finish would look against a Cherryburst, while a beautifully figured Rosewood fingerboard rounds out this gorgeous guitar. As you can see, this piece of Spalted Alder looks great on this ASAT Junior II prototype, a model we’ve been in love with since we launched it with the Korina Collection.

ASAT Deluxe II

CLF065513

ASAT Junior II

CLF60484

Serial Number: CLF60484

Date Completed: June 21, 2011

Description: Black over Alder, #1 Hard Rock Maple neck, Light Tint Gloss neck finish with Gloss Black headstock, Tune-o-Matic bridge, Crème Double Faux Binding. G&L P-90 pickups.

Special Features: At the time we were interested in bringing back the ASAT Junior, a Custom Creations Limited Edition model from 1998. This time around, we wanted to use P-90 pickups, so we wound these with crème covers to look elegant with a Gloss Black finish on this guitar. We also thought it would be cool to have crème binding, but there was none available which matched our P-90s. So, we had the guys at Kustom Color mix some crème paint to match the pickups, and Malcolm sprayed the paint on the body edge before taping for faux binding lines and spraying the black color coat. This is certainly one of our earliest prototypes with the colored faux binding effect. The Quartersawn Maple neck is fitted with vintage frets and is finished with a Gloss Black headstock coupled with an early blend of our Light Tint Gloss neck finish, which was officially launched with the January 2013 price list. This guitar was sitting in the room as we were planning the Korina Collection, and sure enough, someone pointed to this guitar and instantly we knew it: the ASAT Junior II would be a perfect addition.

ASAT Deluxe II

CLF60423

Serial Number: CLF60423

Date Completed: June 2, 2011

Description: Aged Natural Gloss over Korina, #1 Hard Rock Maple neck with Pau Ferro fingerboard and Light Tint Gloss finish, 1-ply Black pickguard. Seymour Duncan pickups.

Special Features: This is the prototype for the Korina Collection ASAT Deluxe II, but without the Quartersawn Maple neck we later decided to specify for the production models.

Available at: Studio Gears in Temecula, CA. www.studiogears.com Suggested Retail Price $2,100

ASAT Deluxe

CLF063818

Serial Number: CLF063818

Date Completed: January 31, 2012

Description: Nearly Naked™ (NENA) Black Ice over Swamp Ash, #1 Hard Rock Maple neck with Clear Satin finish, Black hardware including Saddle Lock bridge. G&L humbuckers.

Special Features: This may be the first instrument we built out in this finish, used later that year for the 2012 Special Collection: Black Ice models. We’re sure that this guitar served as an example as we planned the Black Ice collection, though ultimately we chose the ASAT Deluxe II with its Tune-o-Matic bridge for the collection.

ASAT Classic Alnico

CLF59269

Serial Number: CLF59269

Date Completed: October 8, 2010

Description: Butterscotch Blonde over Swamp Ash, #1 Hard Rock Maple neck with Light Tint Gloss neck finish, 1-ply Black pickguard. Seymour Duncan pickups.

Special Features: Over the years we thought about producing an ASAT Classic with Alnico V pickups, just as the Legacy is to the S-500. At the time we built this guitar, we were considering just one version in a G&L interpretation of a ’52 vibe. The working name was ASAT Classic ’52, though we didn't expect that to be an official name. There’s no substitute for building what’s on our minds, so this is the prototype. We used Seymour Duncan pickups, which sound great as you'd expect, as we hadn’t seriously considered tooling up to make our own Alnico V pickups. Once the crew played this guitar, we knew we had to expand our thinking which lead to the ASAT Classic Alnico.

Available at: Studio Gears in Temecula, CA. www.studiogears.com Suggested Retail Price $1,800

ASAT Classic Alnico

CLF064602

Serial Number: CLF064602

Date Completed: May 21, 2012

Description: Butterscotch Blonde over Swamp Ash, 1-ply Black pickguard, #2a Hard Rock Maple neck with Vintage Tint Gloss neck finish. G&L Alnico V pickups.

Special Features: This guitar picks up from the concept of CLF59269 built a year and a half before, but this guitar has G&L Alnico V pickups specced by Paul Gagon and wound by Johnny McLaren. We were still thinking about offering single package for ASAT Classic specced out just like this guitar, and we still didn’t have a name. Two months later we launched the ASAT Classic Alnico as a freestanding model.

Available at: Studio Gears in Temecula, CA. www.studiogears.com Suggested Retail Price $1,750

ASAT Classic 'S' Alnico

CLF064603

Serial Number: CLF064603

Date Completed: May 18, 2012

Description: Clear Orange over Swamp Ash, #1 Hard Rock Maple neck with Light Tint Gloss finish, 3-ply Crème pickguard, Black middle pickup cover, chrome neck pickup cover. G&L Alnico V pickups.

Special Features: At the time we’d completed development of the ASAT Classic Alnico, and of course, as soon as we had our own Alnico V pickups, we began working on a Classic S version. To do this, we changed the winding direction and polarity of the neck pickup and added a Legacy middle pickup which is RW/RP. This way the “in-between” combinations of neck+middle and middle+bridge would be humbucking as on a Legacy. We had to know just how well the pickups would pair, and this guitar did double duty of pickup testing with an aesthetic test of the Clear Orange on Swamp Ash paired with our Light Tint Gloss neck finish. We waited several months before giving the Classic S Alnico the green light for production, launching with the January 2013 price list. The Light Tint Gloss neck finish was added to the price list at the same time.

Available at: Studio Gears in Temecula, CA. www.studiogears.com Suggested Retail Price $2,100

ASAT Classic 'S' Alnico

CLF064601

Serial Number: CLF064601

Date Completed: May 18, 2012

Description: Aged Natural Gloss over Swamp Ash, 3-ply Black pickguard, #1 Hard Rock Maple neck with Rosewood fingerboard and Light Tint Gloss neck finish. G&L pickups.

Special Features: At this time we were still working on the ASAT Classic ‘S’ Alnico which was launched in January 2013. We started building this prototype after we started CLF064603, which was actually completed just before this guitar on the same day. For this one, we wanted to try matching the body to the neck with its Light Tint Gloss finish. Despite the different woods, it sure does look like a good match. An interesting and beautiful concept.

Available at: The Guitar Store in Seattle, WA. www.seattleguitarstore.com Suggested Retail Price $2,100

ASAT Classic

CLF064270

Serial Number: CLF064270

Date Completed: March 16, 2012

Description: Graphite Metallic over Alder, Faux Double Bound in Silver, #1 Hard Rock Maple neck with Ebony fingerboard and Clear Satin neck finish, faux Carbon Fiber pickguard. MFD pickups.

Special Features: This guitar was inspired by a faux carbon fiber pickguard sample sent to us by Paul Chandler. With the pickguard sitting on a desk in front of us, we just let it “speak” to us. Carbon fiber is clearly modern with a high performance vibe to it; just ask any motorhead. So we went in the shop to look at colors and found that Graphite Metallic looked great with this pickguard. As Malcolm was about to spray the body, he thought he’d do a double faux binding treatment in a lighter shade of silver. After all, he’d been experimenting with double faux binding that year, following his inspiration for a guitar we built for Brad Whitford. A Maple or Rosewood fingerboard wouldn’t suit this guitar, so we opted for Ebony. The result is this cool ASAT Classic that’s got a distinctly contemporary vibe.

Available at: Studio Gears in Temecula, CA. www.studiogears.com Suggested Retail Price $1,950

S-500 Deluxe

CLF066871

Serial Number: CLF066871

Date Completed: February 26, 2013

Description: Autumn Burst over Flame Maple Top on Equatorial Mahogany body, Dual Fulcrum vibrato, Black pickup covers, #1 Hard Rock Maple neck with Rosewood fingerboard, Clear Gloss headstock face with Clear Satin on the back of the neck. G&L MFD single-coil pickups.

Special Features: We had been getting some samples of Equatorial Mahogany from one of our suppliers, and we decided to use some in place of the African Mahogany normally used for S-500 Deluxe guitars. While we were at it, we decided to see how Autumn Burst finish would look over the Flame Top. At the time Autumn Burst had only been applied over Western Sugar Pine for certain Launch Edition ASAT Classic models, but it sure does look good on this killer Flame Top. The deep color of the burst covers the whole back of the body, which highlights the Equatorial Mahogany nicely as this wood is lighter in color than African Mahogany. This guitar also has a Clear Gloss headstock face while back of the neck has Clear Satin finish.

Available at: The Guitar Store in Seattle, WA. www.seattleguitarstore.com Suggested Retail Price $1,850

ASAT Z-3

CLF60612

Serial Number: CLF60612

Date Completed: August 8, 2012

Description: Clear Orange finish over Spalted Alder body, Saddle Lock bridge, Pearl pickguard, White pickup covers, #1 Bird's Eye Maple neck with Clear Gloss finish and early ASAT logo. G&L MFD Z-coil pickups.

Special Features: We'd been doing more with Spalted Alder on special models in recent years, typically with either a Clear Gloss or Clear Satin body finish. Naturally we wanted to try a different transparent finish and thought Clear Orange might look good. The Will Ray model always looked cool in Clear Orange over Swamp Ash, so we thought we'd go ahead and make this a Z-3. Sure enough, it looked great. We needed a neck and just happened to have a gorgeous Bird's Eye Maple neck handy. We haven't decided whether we will build any Spalted Alder instruments in Clear Orange, but one thing's for sure: we'll never forget how sweet this Z-3 looks.

Available at: The Guitar Store in Seattle, WA. www.seattleguitarstore.com Suggested Retail Price $2,410

Legacy

CLF065378

Serial Number: CLF065378

Date Completed: August 23, 2012

Description: Root Beer Metallic finish over Alder body, Saddle Lock bridge, 3-ply Black/White/Black pickguard, Black pickup covers and knobs, #1 Hard Rock Maple neck with Clear Satin finish. G&L CLF-100 Alnico pickups.

Special Features: We are always exploring new colors to add to the line, and the idea for Root Beer finish came up in discussion. We decided to blend a nice shade of brown metallic that we thought best represented Root Beer, a name we’d already taken to (maybe we were thirsty), and spray up a hardtail body we had handy in the wood shop. We liked it enough to go ahead and build this Legacy with a 3-ply Black/White/Black pickguard, Black pickup covers and knobs to let the Root Beer metallic finish take center stage. We haven't decided whether we will add this to the line, but we're ready to let this gorgeous Legacy out into the world.

Available at: The Guitar Store in Seattle, WA. www.seattleguitarstore.com Suggested Retail Price $1,500

Legacy

CLF064736

Serial Number: CLF064736

Date Completed: June 6, 2012

Description: Galaxy Black Metallic finish over Alder body, Dual Fulcrum vibrato, Aluminum engraved pickguard, Black pickup covers and knobs, #1 Hard Rock Maple neck with Clear Gloss finish and Galaxy Black headstock. G&L CLF-100 Alnico pickups.

Special Features: We met this guy from Japan who makes these cool engraved pickguards and he built us a sample Legacy pickguard. Well, it's silver, with darker accents, and we thought it would look cool with a black body. Around this time we were experimenting with a new metallic finish (see prototype CLF064148 completed March 5th, 2012) we mixed that to us looks like the night sky viewed from the dark surroundings of a desert. So, Galaxy Black it was. Naturally, it needed black pickup covers and knobs. As for the neck, we thought it would look good to brighten it up with a maple fingerboard, but it couldn't be too plain. So, we shot the headstock in Galaxy Black and gave the whole neck a Clear Gloss finish. Perhaps we'll do something more with that cool guy from Japan. That pickguard sure does look awesome, but we've stared at it long enough so it's time to let it go.

ASAT Deluxe

CLF064148

Serial Number: CLF064148

Date Completed: March 5, 2012

Description: Galaxy Black Metallic finish over Western Sugard Pine body, Double Faux Binding in Flame Red, shortened ASAT Classic bridge with radiused corners, Red "Zig Zag" pickguard, #4 Hard Rock Maple neck with Ebony fingerboard and Light Tint Satin finish. G&L Alnico humbucking pickups by Paul Gagon.

Special Features: Brad Whitford of Aerosmith asked us to build him an ASAT Deluxe with a clear vision of what he wanted. He described a Western Sugar Pine-bodied black guitar with red binding, something like a Batmobile color scheme. Since there wasn’t any good solid red binding available, we achieved the effect by spraying a red coat along the side of the body then taping off bands as we would actual binding before spraying a Gloss Black color coat. While we were tinkering with the idea, we tried another Western Sugar Pine body with the red double faux binding but finished in a Black metallic finish that has colored undertones to the flakes. The finish reminded us of the night sky viewed from pitch black darkness of the desert, so we came up with a name: Galaxy Black. No, we haven’t decided whether we’ll offer Galaxy Black, but the double faux binding concept led to further development and is now standard on the ASAT Bass Tom Hamilton signature model. Bet you can guess Tom saw Brad’s ASAT. Paul Chandler had sent us a variety of cool pickguard samples, including a very cool red "zig zag" one which we decided to use on this guitar. Rounding out the R&D value of this guitar was application of a Light Tint Satin neck finish which debuted in the January 2013 price list.

Superhawk Jerry Cantrell

CLF60305

Serial Number: CLF60305

Date Completed: May 20, 2011

Description: Ivory over Soft Maple, Saddle Lock bridge with Black powdercoated base plate, Black knobs and toggle selector, Black G&L tuners, custom profile #4 Hard Rock Maple neck with Ebony fingerboard and Ivory headstock. G&L Alnico humbucking pickups by Paul Gagon.

Special Features: Early in the Superhawk development cycle, this guitar came together after we had the CAD/CAM work completed for the neck. Though the neck profile is the same as the JC Rampage, the JC Rampage neck has added length to accommodate the Floyd Rose locking nut. For the Superhawk, we edited out that extra length and re-flowed the transition into the headstock. This guitar has pickups by Paul Gagon, but for the production model we decided to stick with the Seymour Duncan JB for consistency between the Superhawk and the Rampage, adding an SD '59 neck for the 'Hawk. This is the first Superhawk Jerry Cantrell prototype completed.

They have an incredible array of color charts from just about every car company (US and foreign) and the formulas to match the colors. We are always looking for interesting solid colors and this one is called Sunset Coral, a Ford color offered between 1956 and 1958. We still haven’t decided it this is something that will be offered, but for now here’s one unique ASAT Z-3.

Date Completed: April 26, 2011

Description: Dark Korina (Black Limba) body with Aged Natural finish, Hard Rock Maple neck with Light Tint Gloss finish and Pao Ferro fingerboard. Seymour Duncan JB and ’59 pickups with chrome covers.

Special Features: We received a sample shipment African Limba, better known to musicians as Korina, from our supplier who explained that they could deliver premium quality Korina if we were interested. Among the sample pieces received, we found two beautiful examples that were considerably darker than the others. After speaking with the supplier and doing some research online, we learned that Korina is separated into two groups: “White Limba” and “Black Limba”. With the samples of both White Limba and Black Limba in our shop, we began thinking about what sort of guitars or basses would be interesting to build. Over the next few months, the G&L Custom Creations team developed the Korina Collection which was announced on July 19th, 2011.

Musicians widely recognize White Limba, and with a classic appearance in mind, the team decided to use White Limba for the Korina Collection. However, we were intrigued enough by the Black Limba pieces that we built this guitar and an ASAT Bass.

ASAT Deluxe

CLF60323

Serial Number: CLF60323

Date Completed: June 5, 2011

Description: Korina (White Limba) body with Old-School Tobacco Sunburst finish, Hard Rock Maple neck with Light Tint Satin finish and Ebony fingerboard. Seymour Duncan JB and ’59 pickups with chrome covers.

Special Features: This guitar was built shortly after CLF60340 in the development phase of what would become the Korina Collection. By this time in mid-2011, we were certain that the concept of Korina-bodied G&Ls was attractive, but we were still trying to decide on the specific models, colors and features to use in production. We felt the ASAT Deluxe was an obvious choice for Korina with its twin humbuckers, and our first step was to consider body finishes and neck woods. This guitar was made to see how our Old-School Tobacco Sunburst would look over Korina and evaluate the tone of Ebony versus a Pao Ferro for the fingerboard. About one month later, the G&L Custom Creations team had finalized the the Korina Collection which was announced on July 19th, 2011.

ASAT Classic Bluesboy

CLF60349

Serial Number: CLF60349

Date Completed: April 4, 2011

Description: Korina (White Limba) body with Aged Natural finish, Hard Rock Maple neck with Light Tint Gloss finish and Paul Ferro fingerboard. MFD bridge pickup and Seymour Duncan ’59 neck pickup with chrome cover.

Special Features: This is the first cosmetically correct prototype model for the Korina Collection. At this point, we had experimented with several body finishes and were certain that this Aged Natural finish should be offered in the Korina Collection. While we considered offering other finishes, ultimately we decided the overall look of this instrument was ideal so Aged Natural became the sole finish available in the collection. Since this guitar was built primarily for our cosmetic evaluation, we used standard flat-sawn maple for the neck. By the time Korina Collection models were finalized, quarter-sawn maple was selected for the necks.

ASAT Deluxe II

CLF60204

Serial Number: CLF60204

Date Completed: May 12, 2011

Description: 3-piece Swamp Ash body with Honeyburst finish, Tune-O-Matic bridge, Black knurled knobs, Hard Rock Maple neck with Clear Satin finish, Gloss Black headstock and Rosewood fingerboard. Seymour Duncan JB and ’59 pickups with chrome covers.

Special Features: During a product planning meeting the discussion of the Korina instruments came up. At this time we had already made the Bluesboy prototype CLF60349 and we were satisfied with that guitar. As we discussed progress of the ASAT Deluxe variant, one of the team suggested we consider making a Korina-bodied model with two humbuckers and another with P-90s, making both more of an authentic blend of Fullerton and Kalamazoo by adding a Tune-O-Matic bridge and stop-bar tailpiece. The inspiration came from our 1998 Custom Creations ASAT Junior standing nearby. The team agreed this would be very cool, so we set to work to prepare CNC code to route an ASAT Deluxe with a Tune-O-Matic bridge.

This guitar is our first completed, fully functional version of what became the ASAT Deluxe II in the Korina Collection. It was built using a three-piece Swamp Ash body as we didn’t want to use any of our limited supply of Korina for an engineering proof-of-concept prototype. The neck for this prototype had been used on another sample a few months earlier, though that guitar was later dismantled, so in the interest of time the team decided to re-use the neck for this prototype. At this point we still had not finalized design details for the ASAT Deluxe II, such as the teardrop pickguard or knobs. Since this is an engineering prototype it was particularly important give it a rigorous testing, so three of the G&L craftsmen took turns taking this guitar out to play gigs. As with any gigging instrument, dings and dents can occur, and this guitar sustained a bit of damage during one of the shows. There’s a finish crack and paint chip along the back edge, but it doesn’t do anything to compromise the tone and playability of this guitar.

Comanche

CLF49990

Serial Number: CLF49990

Date Completed: May 2, 2011

Description: Spalted Alder body with Clear Satin finish, 3-ply BWB pickguard, black knurled knobs, Hard Rock Maple neck with Clear Satin finish, GraphTech nut.

Special Features: The L-2000 CLF60345 was the first complete Spalted Alder instrument G&L made, but the body on this Comanche was the very first instrument body we cut to evaluate how this material would respond to the tools on our HAAS CNC machines. The grain match on this body isn’t the best so that’s why we selected this piece of Spalted Alder for our test.

The spalting that we find so attractive results from the natural decay process of a fallen tree. There are many variables affecting the decay process, including wood species, temperature, humidity, pH, soil type, spores in the local environment, and probably many other variables. Often only a small portion of a log will have visible spalting, while some parts of a tree may simply decay without developing a spalt pattern. Many types of wood will spalt. Some such as Maple and Birch are known for a their attractive spalting and may remain useful further into the spalting process, particularly for furniture veneers.

ASAT Classic Bluesboy

CLF60700

Date Completed: March 21, 2012

Description: Swamp Ash body with Honey Ale finish, Hard Rock Maple neck with Rosewood fingerboard and Clear Satin finish. MFD bridge pickup and Seymour Duncan Seth Lover neck pickup with chrome cover.

Special Features: It took several attempts to get the 2012 Special Collection Nearly Naked Honey Ale finish to look and feel just right, and several processes in our Wood Shop and Paint Department had to be modified or re-engineered to achieve the desired end result. This Bluesboy is the first cosmetically correct sample where all the elements came together. In finalizing the 2012 Special Collection, the team decided to offer the ASAT Classic S instead of the Bluesboy, so this guitar is the only Bluesboy in the style of the 2012 Special Collection.

Legacy

CLF06337

Serial Number: CLF06337

Date Completed: November 21, 2011

Description: Western Sugar Pine body with Graphite Metallic finish, Hard Rock Maple neck with Rosewood fingerboard and Vintage Tint Gloss finish. CLF-100 Alnico pickups.

Special Features: The team wanted to test a solid color finish over a Western Sugar Pine body to be sure there wouldn't be problems with raised grain (a condition where the grain pattern starts to show through the finish) or visible seam lines where the body pieces are glued together. Graphite Metallic was chosen as the test finish because metallic colors seem to highlight anomolies in the wood, sanding and/or buffing. The team was pleased with the result, just after the guitar was built and again after inspecting it months later.

ASAT Deluxe

CLF60531

Serial Number: CLF60531

Date Completed: October 18, 2011

Description: Alder body with Red Swirl finish, Black knurled knobs, bridge plate and Schaller tuners, Hard Rock Maple neck with Clear Satin finish. Seymour Duncan JB and ’59 pickups.

Special Features: G&L offered three colors of “swirl” finishes in the 1990s. The finish process requires a few layers of paint to achieve the swirl effect, and occasionally the layers may delaminate. Though failures were infrequent, concern about the stability of this finish caused them to be discontinued. Though requests from dealers continued, G&L refused to take more orders. Well over a decade later, the team decided to revisit the process using more contemporary materials and modified techniques. This red swirl ASAT Deluxe was the third attempt and has has held up for about eight months. Satisfied that the performance of this prototype, the team has released it for sale. As of June 2012 no decision has been reached regarding the return of swirl finishes to production.

Legacy

CLF60656

Serial Number: CLF60656

Date Completed: November 21, 2011

Description: Western Sugar Pine body with Clear Red finish, Western Sugar Pine neck with Rosewood fingerboard and Clear Satin finish. Model logo deleted. CLF-100 Alnico pickups.

Special Features: Our artist relations rep had been in discussion with Brad Whitford of Aerosmith about a possible signature model. Brad was a big fan of a guitar with a Pine body and neck he had made by another builder several years earlier. None of the G&L team could remember hearing of anyone using Pine for a neck, but we figured it would be worth a try. We contacted one of our wood suppliers to order some Western Sugar Pine with nice straight grain. This Legacy is the first guitar we built both neck and body made of Pine. The neck seems to be quite stable as we haven't needed to adjust the truss rod any more often than a standard maple neck.

ASAT Classic Bluesboy

CLF062973

Serial Number: CLF062973

Date Completed: October 18, 2011

Description: Western Sugar Pine body with Clear Red finish, Roasted Maple neck with Clear Gloss finish. MFD bridge pickup and Seymour Duncan Seth Lover neck pickup with chrome cover.

Special Features: The prototyle was made to evaluate two things. First, the team wanted to see how a Western Sugar Pine body would looked in a transparent color. The natural color of this Pine has a more yellow hue compared to Swamp Ash so we were fairly confident that any of our yellow/amber/orange transparent finishes (bursts or solid colors) would look nice. However, we were not so confient about some of the reds, blues and greens. We painted this one Clear Red and it turned out very nice. The second thing we wanted to evaluat with this instrument was a neck made entirely of Roasted Maple. When G&L builds an all-maple neck, either of flat-sawn or quarter-sawn maple, the fingerboard is sliced off from the wood, the truss rod inserted, and the two pieces are glued back together. The roasting process is intended to increase the hardness and stability of the neck, though we discovered it can also make the wood more brittle which requires more care in the manufacturing process. On this neck there are hairline cracks around the face position markers caused as the dots were pressed in, though the gloss finish covers them. In the process we learned how to better manage Roasted Maple when used for the fingerboard. One thing the team was unanimous about: This is one beautiful guitar.

Legacy

CLF062988

Serial Number: CLF062988

Date Completed: October 24, 2011

Description: Autumn Burst over Swamp Ash body, Roasted Maple neck with Rosewood fingerboard and Clear Gloss finish. Model logo deleted. G&L CLF-100 alnico single coil pickups.

Special Features: Following CLF062973 which was our first instrument with a solid Roasted Maple neck, we wanted to build a Roasted Maple neck with a Rosewood fingerboard. We wanted to see how the color of the two woods appeared immediately aside each other, so we sprayed the entire neck - even the Rosewood fingerboard - with a clear gloss finish. Our master painter, Malcolm McLamore, came up with this Autumn Burst finish (later used for the ASAT Classic Alnico Launch Edition) for the body. The overall combination of the Roasted Maple neck, Rosewood fingerboard and Autumn Burst finish make this a very striking Legacy.

Legacy Deluxe

CLF60344

Serial Number: CLF60344

Date Completed: April 14, 2011

Description: Korina (White Limba) body with Aged Natural finish, Hard Rock Maple neck with Pau Ferro fingerboard and Light Tint Gloss finish. Two CLF-100 Alnico single-coil pickups and Seymour Duncan JB humbucker in the bridge position. DFS Vibrato, black knurled knobs.

Special Features: When the first small shipment of korina arrived we were not certain which models would be part of our special run concept that became the Korina Collection. Though we had completed the ASAT Classic Blueboy Korina CLF60349 proto earlier in the month and liked the classic look, we wanted to explore the idea of building a model without a pickguard to highlight as much of the wood as possible. This The Legacy Deluxe is that prototype, made with some of the best two-piece Korina we could find. Ultimately, the Legacy Deluxe was not included in the Korina Collection, but this is truly a stunning instrument that sounds as good as it looks.

ASAT Special Deluxe "Cowhide"

CLF56578

Serial Number: CLF56578

Date Completed: January 6, 2010

Description: Swamp Ash body with genuine Cowhide on the front, clear satin finish on the sides and back, Hard Rock Maple neck with Rosewood fingerboard with genuine Cowhide on the headstock face, clear satin finish on the back. Black Saddle Lock bridge, knurled knobs and Schaller tuners. G&L Jumbo MFD pickups.

In exploring other ideas with Johnny, one was to make an ASAT Special Deluxe with a Cowhide "top". Johnny returned some weeks later with a large piece of cowhide he thought would be perfect project, so we gave him an unfinished body and neck to have at it. We've had this guitar on display at the G&L factory for over two years and once thing's for sure - it puts a smile on the face of everyone who sees it. Now we've decided it's time to let it out into the world where it can make many more people smile. Johnny Garcia’s signature is carved on the back of the body.

CLF56577

Serial Number: CLF56577

Date Completed: January 6, 2010

Description: Custom engraved/branded Swamp Ash body, Hard Rock Maple neck with Rosewood fingerboard. Custom artwork by Johnny Garcia. G&L MFD pickups.

Special Features: ASAT Classic "The Roses" was one of four instruments that artist Johnny Garcia created for us as examples of his carving/burning work. As we were discussing what sort of artwork would be interesting to apply to a guitar, the idea of artwork reminiscent a tattoo came up when someone on the team suggested a rose pattern. Johnny told us he had never done anything like that but he'd do some research. We gave him some blocks of of Swamp Ash to experiment with, and after about two weeks of studying the appearance of roses, Johnny came back with an amazing sample. We decided that "The Roses" concept was a great idea so we gave Johnny an unfinished body and neck to work his magic. While Johnny was working on the body and neck, we experimented with some finish ideas using the ash blocks he'd carved. Our goal was to apply a finish thin enough that you could feel the areas where Johnny had done his carving/burning, paving the way for the Nearly Naked finish introduced on the 2012 Special Collection. The front of the body and headstock are Transparent Red satin finish while the back of the body has a dark brown tone, though all over the guitar you can still feel the wood grain. Johnny Garcia’s signature is carved on the back of the body.

Date Completed: January 7, 2010

Description: Custom engraved/branded Swamp Ash body, Quartersawn Maple neck with Maple Fingerboard. Custom artwork by Johnny Garcia. G&L Jumbo MFD pickups.

Special Features: ASAT Special Deluxe "Santa Fe" was one of four instruments that artist Johnny Garcia created for us as examples of his carving/burning work. As we were discussing what sort of artwork would be interesting to apply to a guitar, one idea we discussed was a Native American / Southwestern expression. Johnny was given an unfinished ASAT Special Deluxe body and neck, and when he came back with this design we were blown away. As with CLF56577 "The Roses" guitar, our goal was to apply a finish thin enough that you could feel the areas where Johnny had done his carving/burning, paving the way for the Nearly Naked finish introduced on the 2012 Special Collection. G&L master painter Malcolm McLamore blended and applied this beautiful Transparent Turquoise satin finish which perfectly complements the Native American vibe. Johnny Garcia’s signature is carved on the back of the body.

CLF56776

Serial Number: CLF56757

Date Completed: January 7, 2010

Description: Custom engraved/branded Swamp Ash body, Hard Rock Maple neck with Rosewood Fingerboard. Custom artwork by Johnny Garcia. Baltic Amber pickguard by Paul Chandler. G&L MFD pickups.

Special Features: ASAT Classic "The Wrangler" was one of four instruments that artist Johnny Garcia created for us as examples of his carving/burning work. In discussions with Johnny about possible themes for the instruments, the concept of a cowboy/old west/wrangler came up, and immediately Johnny's mind was going full throttle. On this guitar, Johnny carved a bull skull and barbed wire binding, perfect elements for this concept. As with the other Johnny Garcia G&Ls, we wanted a finish that would allow Johnny's work to be felt to the touch. We wanted a warm, natural feel that reflected the warmth and spirit of the old Southwest, and tt was for this guitar which G&L master painter Malcolm McLamore first blended a color which became known as Honey Ale in the 2012 Special Collection. We also have to give credit to our pickguard supplier, Paul Chandler, who had sent us samples of this unique and beautiful pickguard material called Baltic Amber. Ultimately, this guitar served as the inspiration for the 2012 Special Collection launched two years after this guitar was completed. As with the other G&Ls Johnny Garcia worked on, it has his name name carved on the back.
